Arguably one of the most famous “Classic” games every made. You have played, I’ve played it, and we all love it. One of the first and most famous implementations of tetromino games is Tetris, first created over 30 years ago (1984) by Alexey Pajitnov, it has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide across a variety of consoles and platforms. Over 35 million of those were on the Nintendo Game Boy – when Tetris became a global phenomenon. It is the first game to be exported in large scale from the soviet union to USA back in the early days! Block games have been shown to be entertaining, addictive and even boost brain power! How about that!
Over the last decade, tetromino games have been re-invented for multiple devices – handheld games, consoles, mobile apps … and today Wearables Blocks Gear!
What is Blocks Gear
Blocks gear is an implementation of the classic tetrotmino block games designed to work on the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch . The Gear 2 line is a successor to the Samsung Galaxy Gear. While maintaining similarities to the original Galaxy Gear, the Gear 2 line runs the Samsung-developed Tizen operating system instead of Android, while providing improved functionality and a refreshed hardware design.
How it Works
A random sequence of tetromino blocks fall down the screen. The objective of the game is to manipulate these blocks, by moving each one sideways and rotating it by 90 degree units, with the aim of creating a horizontal line of blocks without gaps. When such a line is created, it disappears, and any block above the deleted line fall.
To move your blocks one step to the left in Blocks Gear you swipe left. To move it to the right, you swipe right. To rotate it, simply swipe up. And finally , swipe down to send it swooshing right down to the bottom of the screen. Blocks Gear is written using HTML5 and Javascript, using the Tizen for Wearable SDK .
Features
Currently, Blocks Gear works as a standalone Galaxy Gear 2 app. This means that you do not need a perpertual connection to to a Samsung smartphone or tablet to play it. It also sports a highscore section where players can view their 10 best scores.
Future Upgrades
To improve game play, we are working on improving the range of gestures available to manipulate each block. We would also allow users customize what each gesture does. Eg users will be able to customize the swipe down and swipe up gestures to either rotate or move down etc . We are also working on localizing the app into multiple languages starting with Arabic, Korean, German, French and Spanish.
